Undersea diamond mining
Diamond mining isn’t all about dynamiting tunnels into mountainsides and sending people underground. One company’s diamond mining operations took place under clear, open skies on the shallow waters off the coast of South Africa. The seabed was surveyed then dredged before the team sifted through the contents in the hunt for diamonds. But there was just one problem. They couldn’t get a precise picture of what they’d dredged and what they’d missed – a picture that could be worth tens of millions of dollars.
The project’s leader asked RESON if they could come up with a solution. The answer was a resounding ‘Yes!’. The resulting SONAR system generated accurate, real-time images, enabling the diamond miners to monitor their operation with precision. And, the returns were so great the company soon bought a second system.
